Farm Pond Management
What causes farm pond water to turn green?
Green water is typically a phytoplankton (algae) bloom — usually beneficial because plankton supports the food web. Excessive blooms can crash and cause oxygen depletion. Shallow ponds with high nutrient loads (manure, fertilizer runoff) bloom most heavily. Cover crops on adjacent fields reduce nutrient loading and bloom severity.
