Operation type

Fiber / Specialty Products breeds.

  • some experience
  • 20–500 head sheep, 10–100 head Angora goats, 5–50 head fiber cattle (rare)

Operations producing wool, mohair, cashmere, or feather as a primary product. Fiber quality (micron count, staple length, color) matters more than meat or milk performance. Premium niche markets.

Key selection criteria

What matters for fiber / specialty products.

  • Fiber micron count (wool: <22 micron is fine wool premium)
  • Staple length and uniformity
  • Fleece weight per shearing
  • Skin / fleece health (resistance to wool break, blowfly, lice)
  • Color range (heritage breeds with multiple natural colors carry premium)

Infrastructure required

  • Shearing facility or relationship with traveling shearer
  • Fleece skirting and grading area
  • Predator-resistant fencing (high-tensile + livestock guardian dog)
  • Fiber storage (clean, dry, climate-controlled for premium)

Marketing channels

  • Direct-to-handspinner / fiber artist
  • Mill processing for blanket / yarn / roving
  • Fiber festivals and breed-specific shows
  • Online fiber-specific marketplaces

Self-assessment

Is this the right fit?

  • Are you committed to learning fleece grading and skirting — or do you have a partner / contractor who can?
  • Have you researched fiber buyers in your area or are you prepared to ship to mills?
  • Are you OK with the predator-protection requirements that fiber animals demand?

If you can answer "yes" to most of these, the breeds below match your operation type.
