About the species
Mountain goats are the only North American member of the Rupicaprinae — a tribe of hoofed mammals that evolved for life on near-vertical rock. They occupy the highest, steepest country in the Cascades, the Northern Rockies, the Alaskan ranges, and the Olympics (where they were introduced and are now being culled). Mature billies weigh 200-300 pounds, with horn growth that adds perceptible mass each year for the first six to eight years.
Mountain goat tags are draw-only in most jurisdictions, with multi-year point waits common. The hunt is often considered the hardest in North America for the simple reason that recovering a downed goat from above-treeline rock face is genuinely dangerous work. Alaska and British Columbia offer the most accessible opportunity; the Lower 48 states (Washington, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada) all run small-quota seasons.
