About the species

Blue-winged teal and green-winged teal are the two small dabblers that share the "teal" common name. Blue-wings are early migrants — most have left the Northern US by mid-October — while green-wings push later and tolerate cold significantly better. Mature birds run 12-16 ounces.

Most flyways run a special early-September teal season (blue-winged primarily) with a separate, more conservative bag limit. Regular duck season includes both teal species within the aggregate. Their small size and quick, twisting flight makes them a favorite challenge target. Decoying tight to flooded sheet water with small spreads is the dominant technique.
