Rhode Island fishing regulations.
- Saltwater coast
- 6 popular species
Rhode Island is small but punches above its weight on the saltwater side — Block Island and Narragansett Bay are striped bass destinations year after year.
Fishing regulations change every season. This page is a summary maintained by Bield — bag limits, exact dates, and species-specific rules must be verified with RIDEM before each trip.
License requirements
Anglers age 16 and older generally need a valid fishing license to fish in Rhode Island. Resident and non-resident licenses are sold online through the RIDEM and at most sporting goods retailers. Annual, multi-day, and lifetime licenses are typically available. Senior, military, and youth discounts apply in most cases. Saltwater fishing requires a separate Rhode Island Recreational Saltwater Fishing License. License costs and exact age thresholds change — verify with the RIDEM before purchase.
Freshwater seasons and limits
Modest in scale — largemouth bass, pickerel, crappie, and stocked trout in small ponds and rivers. The state's reservoir and pond network is well-managed but limited.
River and stream regulations
Stocked trout streams under specific season programs. Small-water bass and pickerel fishing.
Saltwater seasons and limits
Rhode Island is a great saltwater state — striped bass, bluefish, fluke, scup, tautog, false albacore, and bonito along the coast. Block Island is a top destination for stripers and blues.
Special regulations
Saltwater Recreational License separate from freshwater. Trout stocking programs with specific seasons.
