Q.Freshwater Trout & Hatches

Why do trout get selective during a hatch?

A.

When a hatch produces a high density of one insect species on the water, trout key on that specific size, shape, and behavior. Other foods — including nymphs and other insects — get ignored because the focused feeding pattern is more efficient. Mismatched flies (wrong size or silhouette) get refused even when fish are clearly feeding.

Match the hatch precisely during peak emergence. Hatch calendar pages help anticipate which insects will be active.
