Q.Stocking & Trout Fishing

Do stocked trout survive through winter?

A.

Survival depends on water quality, temperature, and habitat. In suitable cold-water streams with good cover and food, stocked trout can survive multiple seasons. In warmer waters or marginal habitat, most stocked trout are caught or die before their first summer. Some streams support holdover populations from prior years' stockings.

Stocking schedule pages cover seasonal stocking; some states label streams suitable for holdover.
